Mithos is seriously a walking spoiler, so everything about him is whited-out for your benefit. Please don't go highlighting if you haven't played. x_x;; Or don't want to be spoiled. Background: Background: Mithos Yggdrasil was born some 4000 years before game canon in Tales of Symphonia, when the Kharlan War was still going on as it neared its end date. His parents died while he was still young, so his sister Martel took care of him. Mithos grew to worship and idolize his elder sister, most likely as a result of her care. As Mithos and Martel were half-elves, they were soon kicked out of the village they lived in, Heimdall. Heimdall, the village of the elves, had become distrusting of all half-elves, even ones that had lived in their village for years. Mithos decided then that he would end the war so that he would be recognized as a hero, and the village would re-accept him and his sister. Along their journey, they met Kratos Aurion and Yuan, who became their travel companions. The four set out to stop the war. Mithos traveled across the world with them, making pacts with the eight Summon Spirits, Maxwell (I think – correct me if I’m wrong), and Origin. From the pact with Origin, Mithos gained the ability to use the Eternal Sword, a weapon that can alter time but can only be used by those with elven blood. Mithos did end the war by getting the two parties to sign a treaty at the Holy Ground of Kharlan. Yet, shortly afterwards, Martel fell at the hands of the people Mithos so desperately believed in. He never fully recovered from the shock; he took his sister’s dying wish, that all people should be tolerant of each other, literally. He somehow talked Kratos and Yuan into starting an organization, Cruxis, to fulfill Martel’s dying wish. They moved their base to Derris Kharlan and used Cruxis Crystals to transform half-elves into “angels”. Lower ranked Cruxis Crystals, called Exspheres, would be given to another branch of Cruxis known as the Desians. Both the Cruxis Crystals and Exspheres had the special ability of accelerating a normal person’s abilities so that they can use skills and abilities one would not have previously been able to use. Yet, they come at a price: these orbs are made from human lives and use their strength. (Mithos made a lot of these using human ranches – a sick parallel to Hitler’s in WWII, where he would use humans to make Exspheres and Cruxis Crystals) Mithos also created a division within Cruxis, the Desians, to act as his lackeys and bad guys to make him look good and to make the new religion he created, the Church of Martel, seem believable. The most important part of all this was that Mithos bound Martel’s soul to the Great Seed. In his world, the Great Seed gave life to the tree that nourished the world. Without a tree, though, the world would soon die. Mithos solved this problem by splitting the world into two and using the mana links from his summon spirits to connect them and hold them in balance. Yet, this also meant that the two worlds, Sylvarant and Tethe’alla, would vie for mana. Mithos created the “Chosen” system and the Legend of World Regeneration (in reality, this would just replenish the world’s mana) for each world. The Chosens, whether male or female, were really Martel’s vessels. When the Chosen unlocks each seal, he or she loses a part of what it means to be human. First comes taste, then the ability to sleep, the ability to feel, his or her voice, and finally his or her heart and memories. By sacrificing themselves, the Chosens believed that they were saving their world. Once they completed their journey, Mithos would attempt to use their bodies to hold Martel’s soul. None of them, up until Colette went on her journey, actually ended up working. This business went on for at least four thousand years, until the chosen of Sylvarant, Colette Brunel, went on her journey with her companions Genis Sage, Raine Sage, and Lloyd Irving. While attempting to stop Lloyd and company, Mithos befriended Genis, who was also a half-elf. It’s believed that Mithos had a sincere friendship with Genis, and truly looked like he might have changed. But he didn’t, and Lloyd in the end had to kill Mithos. Mithos, however, had no regrets – he said that if given the choice, he would do it all over again. Personality: Before Martel’s death, Mithos was an amazing person. He was kind, sincere, brave, and worked hard for tolerance across his world. He truly believed that if you worked hard, you could accomplish great things. Yet, once Martel died, Mithos changed. He began to go insane from the loss of his idol, and slowly lost faith in humans and life itself. I don’t think Mithos is truly evil; he just experienced what no one should ever have to experience at such a young age, and he didn’t know how to deal with it (not that Kratos and Yuan were of much help, either). While what he did was evil, I don’t think he ever realized the full consequences of his actions and what reaching effects they had on people. He’d simply grown immune to feelings. Since this Mithos has lost his memories, however, he’d act more like before Martel’s death: he’d be more open, honest, and friendly towards others. |
